Arawaks

[edit]

The sentance you added

The Spanish also murdered the Arawaks in countless massacres, when they could derive no more benefit from them.

while probably not inaccurate, is in language that it too POV (non-neutral point of view). The language is too loaded for an encyclopedia. The second part especially {when they could derive no more benefit from them) is a rather strong assertion and I would prefer if you could back it up with a reference; as I recall, the massacres of Arawaks by the Spanish were not related to a lack of further "benefit" to be had. In fact, there was a constant labour shortage, which was alleviated by kidnapping so-called "Caribs". Please support the statement, or change it into more neutral language. Ways to improve J.F.A. Cateau van Rosevelt

[edit]

Hello, Phil Fish,

Thank you for creating J.F.A. Cateau van Rosevelt.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

The article REALLY needs references to stay in mainspace, even if they're in Dutch. Also, I'd look at adding a project tag to the talk page?

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Alexandermcnabb}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Alexandermcnabb (talk) 04:38, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexandermcnabb: Thank you for your comments. As you can probably tell I am a real novice on the Wikipedia platform. While I have edited quite a few pages, I only just started attempting to create some. Over the past few weeks, I have started pages in my sandbox and as they weren't complete I did not publish them. Unfortunately when I came back the next day they were gone as was all my work. As you can imagine this is very frustrating. Until I figure out how to save my work and not lose it, I decided to publish the Rosevelt article and get back to it today or real soon.

I will be putting in the Dutch references today, but yesterday I ran out of time, doing both the translation and the pasting.

Phil FishPhil Fish (talk) 20:34, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's vastly frustrating. I have never quite trusted the sandbox, tend to copy things to a Word Doc if I need to 'overnight'. I also work on one new page at a time because more just, well, tempts providence! One approach might be to use draftspace (the 'new article wizard') until you're feeling 100% brave. There are also a couple of templates you can use, {{in use}} and {{intranslation}}, which tell people you're still working on an article. Generally, I wouldn't hit 'publish' on a new article in any case unless I've got at least a lead, a few lines of body and three good references linked to the text. Less than that and some busybody like me might swing by and mark the thing for draft or, worse, deletion before you know it. If it helps, ping me next time you publish something and I'll try and swing by. Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 03:12, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Alexandermcnabb (talk) 17 February 2021

Hi Alexander, I hope this message gets to you. I have been editing a lot of Ichthyologists and fish related pages. Today one of our fellow editors decided that I should not be adding Categories for Ichthyologists that don't have their own page and reversed my edits on 16 or so of my entries. I think that a person that has described 25 or so species should be recognized even if they don't have their own page yet.

Another editor commented that I should not be putting descriptions of the Ichthyologist on their category page, I basically add their life span, their nationality and their area of expertise. Things I would like to know when looking at a Category on the Taxa they described.

I planned on adding a few ichthyologists to the Wikipages, many of whom have pages in other wikis such as German and French.

Of course I would like to know that my time spent will not be reversed by another editor.

Any tips you can give me, regarding the above issues would be helpful. Best regards Phil Fish (talk) 19:14, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category pages

[edit]

Hi. Please don't add lengthy descriptions to category pages. Descriptions on category pages should be limited to what is needed to explain the scope of the category (in most cases, no description is necessary at all, since the category name should be self-evident). Relevant content should be included in the article about the subject. --Paul_012 (talk) 06:15, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Related: please don't add nonexistent categories to articles - as you did on many Betta pages. Not every taxonomist will have sufficient presence to sustain a category in their name, and many will never get one. Only add categories once they actually exist! --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 18:36, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also related, per WP:SMALLCAT, please don't make categories that can't be populated. If an author only described one or two taxa, creating "Category:Taxa described by First Last" is not necessary. Enwebb (talk) 16:19, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am disappointed that you continue to do all of the above, and do not see any value in even responding to these talkpage messages. That is not consistent with the collaborative nature of Wikipedia. A frequent outcome of that behavior, after broader community discussion, is to be blocked from editing, which would be a shame in this case. UnitedStatesian (talk) 17:21, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Phil Fish,

Please do not add nonexistent (red link) categories to any pages on Wikipedia. They cause error messages that other editors have to fix and so are disruptive. You've been warned about this and if you continue, you might be facing a block. Just cease doing so. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 18:39, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Liz,

Yesterday I had a discussion about how many species are necessary to be described before a describer can have its own category, “Taxa named by???” I have been on a many days long journey to put as many fish into the proper describer category. As I put a category down, sometimes it would turn out that (so far) many of the describer’s category only had one (usually) or just a few. I knew as I progressed that there would be more described species to be added that I had not got to as of then. Some of the editors thought that I should keep track of the fish and when I got to about twenty species, I could then add the category. This I begged of them, would entail too much record keeping, and extra effort, to no avail. They understood my problem. As I look at genus, I make sure each fish has a describer, and as such put that into the Category. Sometimes when I run into a singular describer from that genus, there will be other fish in other genus’ that they may have described discovered further down the road. Many describers of fish were also fond of describing reptiles (something I will not cover unless I run into them by accident. I have sent a few snakes, arachnids, mammals to their describers’ category.) So yesterday, rather than create a category the first time I run into it, I would leave the page open and come back when I had seen enough species to make a category. So because of that, there were many “Red” categories. One you have found was “Fang Ping-Wen”. An ichthyologist without a page of his own. My progression up until the comments by some yesterday, was: Look for the describer and category. If no category I would put them in a category, (I am keeping a list of describers with categories). If there was no category for the describer, I would search for the describer’s page and sometime find that they already had a category by searching Wikipedia. If they did not have a category, I would create it. Of course, it turned up red, at which point I would create the new category knowing that more species would populate the category as I continued on. The editors yesterday thought that I had created too many categories with just one or two species, not realizing that there probably would be more species to come. I explained to them, and they kind of agreed to let my project run its course. As a preference to them, I did not create categories for the first time I found a describer. This left many “Red” categories in my wake. In addition to adding categories, I am putting in who the fish was named for if it was a person, usually another ichthyologist. If I found a describer that did not have a page of their own, I would search other Wikipedias (German, French, Spanish, Russian) to see if there was a page for them elsewhere, many times there were. I have a few pages for those individuals in the works. They will be worked on when I finish my describers project, although I know I could never cover all the fish in my lifetime, I will make a concerted effort to get as many as possible. This is tedious work, and I ask your indulgence while I continue on with my work. Between the editors yesterday and you today, I am finding that some of my hard work has been undone. As the seasoned editor that you are, and me just an amateur, I ask for some guidance to help me continue on my work, so that I can satisfy all the requirements of Wikipedia.Phil Fish (talk) 20:52, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greeting Diannaa,

The article concerning Phoxinus likai has been an interesting experience. I have been filling in the fish genus' that have not had their individulal fish categorized. I was doing the genus Phoxinus and when I came to Phoxinus likai it popped up that it had been removed and so I followed the link and (I can't seem to find his name at the moment} had it removed for copyright infringement. I finished up the genus, skipping over likei. When I was done I contacted ( the guy who's name I can't remember and aksed if I could add likai to the rest of the genus. He said sure. So I did.

I am not really sure what you consider copyrighted material in this case. Most fish articles at the minimum have the scientific name, where is it found or exists, and sometimes the maximum length. Most times this information is gathered from Fishbase, other times it is gathered from other material.

So again please let me know what copyrighted material was mistakely placed in the article so I can avoid making the same mistake. I was unable to see what you had removed and of course I don't have any recollection of the whole article.

Thanks for all you do,

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ammoglanis obliquus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://novataxa.blogspot.com/2020/02/ammoglanis-obliquus.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thanks. I appreciate that. Also please be very careful to not copy paste or close paraphrase. I hear folks get blocked after a certain number of copyright warnings. Looking at this talk page, looks like you're at around 5 mentions of copyright. Just trying to give you a head's up so we can avoid that situation. And as you probably know every article gets run through the copyright detector since it is part of the WP:NPP flowchart. Happy editing my friend. –Novem Linguae (talk) 07:06, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Plectranthias cruentus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.biotaxa.org/Zootaxa/article/view/zootaxa.4750.4.6.

Speedy deletion nomination of Ammoglanis obliquus

[edit]

Hello Phil Fish,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Ammoglanis obliquus for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Overlinking

[edit]

Hi Phil,

According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking you should generally only link to an subject once in an article.

“Generally, a link should appear only once in an article, but it may be repeated if helpful for readers, such as in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, hatnotes, and at the first occurrence after the lead. Citations stand alone in their usage, so there is no problem with repeating the same link in many citations within an article; e.g. |work=The Guardian.”

The Triplophysa article was well overlinked, I have been guilty of that in the past but I am now aware of the policy. It’s especially not helpful where most of the links are red. That’s why I rectified the the overlinking in the article.Quetzal1964 (talk) 08:26, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update, I am attempting to see that all the fish in the Triplophysa page have their describers and their Honoria completed. Adding all the extra links, was helping me in that endeavor. I will attempt to work around the restriction.
Hopefully in the future we can provide articles for the authors in red and see them turn to blue. Phil Fish (talk) 23:03, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Chen Zi-Ming requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Liz
Hello Liz,
I hope this message finds you well.
I seem to be misunderstanding the requirements for an ichthyologist to have a “Category” for the fish they have described.
As you are aware, I have been adding pages for fish species that up until now have not had that recognition.
I am keeping it simple, in order to add as many pages as I can.
I primarily add the species with the following information:
Species name; Describers name with link if possible; synonyms if necessary; location where the fish inhabits; maximum size of the fish; references, mostly from Fish Base, or others that I may discover; Category's, (which I follow other species in the genus) Family, Describers, location, and date described.
It seems there is some sort of requirement for the author’s category that I am not aware of.
If the author(describer) does not have a category, I create one on the species page. I do not create a category with no entries. I put the authors name in a category on the species page and then I move on and create a category from that link.
Some editors must feel this is incorrect and delete the categories from the species page.
This in turn creates a category with no entries, and thus creates an issue that the category must be deleted because it contains no entries.
Please help me here as creating a page, and categories takes up a lot of time and finding that I did something wrong is very disturbing.
Please point me in the right directions, so that I can avoid unnecessary effort on my part and not cause editors to have to delete author categories from the species and thus cause Category pages that have no entries.
I have searched the help area but was unable to find an answer regarding the requirements of a Category.
Thanks you in advance for your help in this matter.

Hello, Phil Fish,
I replied to you at Category talk:Taxa named by Calvin R. Bernard which is where I saw your message first. I hope it explains what I know about the situation but I think you would get more answers by talking directly with UnitedStatesian. My role is just tagging categories I come across that are empty. If during the next 7 days after they've been tagged they are no longer empty, then the tag is removed.
As for the rules of taxonomy and naming species, I have little knowledge about that subject. I'm sure you could find more information on how Wikipedia handles that topic at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 20:58, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to go ahead and remove the link you added and add a link to the original paper, as I was able to verify the material directly in that work. Viriditas (talk) 18:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I have fixed the links and added antorher reference.
It should all work now.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
